Lampara Storytelling Contest "The Wind Beneath the Winners' Wings"

Wow, pinahahalagahan ang mga coaches!” says JocelynCalugay, recalling her experience as mentor in Philippine Educational Theater Association and Lampara Books’Kuwentong Bata Kuwentistang Bata storytelling contest.




No stranger to inter-school competitions, Calugay has been training and entering students into different storytelling meets for the past 5 years. According to her, most of the inter-school contests focused only on the contestantsHowever, when her mentee Ian Richmon Z.Manabat won first place for the Grades 1-4 Category in last year’s contest, she was pleased to be called on stage too, “Inuna pa pagtawag sa coach! Nakakataba ng puso.”

Rosalinda De Paz, a Teacher 3 of Dagat-DagatanElementary School in South Navotasis also a veteran atstudent contests. She has mentored numerous students inTalumpatiTula and Buwan ng Wika contests in her 25 years of teaching. Kuwentong Bata, Kuwentistang Batastill intrigued her, Nung narinig kong PETA, sabi ko,minsan lang itoteatro ito

De Paz’ student Ephraim C. Viray was the winner of last year’s Grade 5-7 Category. Viray was a child of humble origins, prompting De Paz to shell out for the costs of the competition. However, she got more than she expected in return. Through the screening process, the contestants and their coaches were given free workshops on Performance, Children’s Rights and Positive Discipline.Andami kong natutunanfeeling ko parang bumalik akosa pagiging estudyantesays De Paz, noting that shenever had a workshop as part of a contest before.

De Paz and Calugay are two of many coaches who became the wind beneath the wings of over 200 contestants last year. Calugay’s advice to potential coaches for this year’s competition: Iparamdam niyo langsa mga bata na masarap lang magkwentoDe Paz recommends telling students “Manalomatalomaramikayong matututunanstepping stone niyo ito”.

Kuwentong Bata, Kuwentistang Bata 2 is open to all elementary students, Category A for Grades 1-4 and Category B for Grades 5-7. Finals will be held at the Manila International Book Fair on September 15, 2013 at the SM Mall of Asia SMX .
